1. March Performance and Daffodil Weekend
We made an outstanding £18,158 in sales last month. It was always going to be a good month because of Daffodil Weekend but the sales on those two days were 30% up on last year (which we all thought was very good) and 50% up on 2009. We logged the amount of sales every hour and for most of the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday, we were taking £300 per hour - the till was smoking! This is about our limit, it is hard to see the money coming out of the customers' purses much faster so we have to think how we can improve next year and break this bottleneck. Thanks for everyone who came in for papers etc during the morning to avoid the queues and thanks especially to the staff and volunteers who helped us get through the weekend.
March was also helped by a wine club round - by the way, the ordering is still open for anyone who missed it, we can get more. But even so, we had only planned for takings to amount to £15,000, so our result is just excellent.
Well done also to the Daffodil Weekend Organising Committee for making such a nice weekend and for enabling us to do so well. Thanks.
2. Easter and Bank Holiday Opening Times
There are so many bank holidays coming up! We're going to make it easy to remember, we will be open from 8.30am until 12.30pm on each of them, in other words, they will be like Sundays. Please don't come earlier than 8.30am as it is very difficult and somewhat dangerous to prepare the newspaper delivery when customers are in the shop. Saturdays will be as usual, 8am till 1pm. A full list will appear on the door of the shop shortly.
3. How about becoming a Sunday Volunteer?
We currently have 6 pairs of volunteers who run the shop on Sundays between 8.30am and 12.30pm. It is the reason why the shop can open on Sunday, otherwise we might not make enough sales for it to be worth opening. We have enough volunteers in normal times and each couple usually operate once every 6 weeks, but these days more people are going away and having other commitments so we are running short of options for certain weekends. If you think you would like to help out in the shop on Sunday, whether you are a single helper or part of a couple, please let one of us know. We can then get you trained, put you with someone who knows the ropes for a while and then programme you in for the rota. It is great fun, ask any of the current volunteers, and the pub is open when you finish!
4. 150 Club Draw
The next draw will be held in the Green Man on Wednesday 20th April, at approximately 8pm. Come and join us.
5. Crop for the Shop Appeal
Now is the time when you might be sowing seeds for the veg plot. Give a thought for the shop a few months down the line, if you pot-on a few more seedlings than you need for yourself, you can donate the extra veggies to the shop and we will sell them, cheaper than usual, to people in the village. It's a great way to help us out and customers who buy the local produce really appreciate the flavour and green-ness of it all. We've already had rhubarb from one family, and have had to ask them for more!
6. Leicester
We want to get a small shopping trolley, to help us transfer heavy goods like drinks and chocolates between the shop and the garage, as we have some tender spinal regions. We've found one that we can have but it is near Leicester. If anyone goes near Hinckley with a car which is a hatchback or bigger, could you collect it for us? Let us know please.
7. Tadpoles
No, we are not selling them, but someone in the village has some and doesn't have a pond. If you think your kids would like to have these tadpoles, please can you contact Di King on
dkfoxglove@googlemail.com
to take them from her.
8. Lastly, do you need heating oil?
There is a fairly new oil consortium run by someone in Fowlmere for our area. They get good prices because there are so many of us wanting a delivery at the same time. If you want to join up, please contact sharon at
sharon@brown.cx
and tell her you got to know because of the shop. The next oil order will be May 1. There is no middle man and the shop isn't gaining anything from the consortium, all the benefit is passed to the customers.
That's all for now, have a great Easter wherever you are!
