Lots of important news as we come to a very busy period at this time of year...

1. Wine Tasting, Saturday 28th May
2. Open Garden Evening, Tuesday 14th June
3. May's 150 Club draw
4. New or seasonal items in the shop
5. Performance in April

1. Wine Tasting. Once again, Noel Young is hosting a wine tasting evening for us at Thriplow Village Hall. It will be on Saturday 28th May, the Saturday before the Spring Bank Holiday and we're going to have a summer theme to the evening. Tickets are available in the shop or from Kevin, priced £10. We will have 7-ish wines to try and a few things to nibble between glasses. You will be able to order any of the wines that we taste. Start time is 7.30pm.

2. Our third Annual Open Garden Evening. We are really grateful to Annie Eccles of the Old Vicarage on Church Street, for opening her garden in aid of shop fundraising. The evening will be Tuesday 14th June, starting at about 6.30pm for up to 2 hours. Tickets are £10 for adults and £6 for children (kids are very welcome), and entry price includes a Pimms or a soft drink (unlimited top-ups for kids), canapes and live music. There will be wine available at a pay bar. Tickets are available from the shop. In the two previous years, these events have been very popular and we will be limited in the number of people we can have, so please get your tickets early - it also helps us plan how much food we have to provide. Let's hope we get a nice evening's weather, as usual.

3. The 150 Club Draw for May will be on Tuesday May 17th in the Green Man as usual, at about 8pm. Come along, have a drink and some food with us, see the balls being drawn and give encouragement to yours. Last month's first prize winner was David White, well done!

4. New produce and seasonal items in the shop.

- We have a good looking deli counter at the moment with some new cheeses, smoked salmon and cold cuts of meat in.
- If you missed the sweet peppers with cream cheese, hard luck, but we will get some more!
- It's the time for BBQ as summer really kicks in, we will have some fresh meat in the fridge but we would advise you to place an order for Russell's meat, especially if the weather forecast looks good. It can usually be delivered next day.
- Don't forget the weekly Leech's order for top quality meat, order by Wednesday evening for Thursday delivery.
- We have also started stocking streaky bacon.
- What would summer be like without Pimms, we've got that!
- We have chilled white and rose wines in case of emergency.
- And we stock some lovely lower alcohol sparkling fruit wines in various flavours - try them!
- Strawberries - yes, they are already in, delicious.
- And to complete the BBQ theme, we have medium sized bags of charcoal in the shop and can get massive bags if the bags we have aren't big enough for you!
- We are going to stock some new yogurts and see how they go. The existing yogurts are popular, and we will keep getting them but we have an opportunity to expand the range with a few specialist flavours too.
- Our "Crop for the Shop" idea has already taken off again this year - we had some lovely leeks in last week that sold very quickly! Look out for other fresh Thriplow-grown fruit and vegetables as we go into summer..... and get them quickly before they go.

5. How did we do in April?

You could be forgiven for thinking April was just one long Bank Holiday, but again the shop was open every day - thanks to everyone who helped out. But with so many half days - no fewer than 12 in the month - our sales were expected to be lower than we'd have liked. In fact, we beat our budget of £13,000 and we achieved sales of £14,436. We are already 6% up on ytd sales against the same period last year, which was a fantastic year throughout. This is just great and we're so pleased that our customers are supporting the shop this way. It seems we are getting new customers all the time as people drop in on their way past, or remember things they need for tonight's meal and nearly everyone who has moved into the village recently has tried the shop and become "regulars".

Finally, we had a computer virus in April (aaarggh!!!) but Nick Wittering exterminated it - thanks Nick.

Bring on May and the rest of the summer...
