Shop Newsletter 2-Aug-2011
 02-Aug-2011   Thriplow Shop   Thriplow Shop

As we go into the school holidays, we can be pleased with things. Here is the news:

1. July was an excellent month
2. Crop for the shop update
3. 150 Club winners for July
4. Sunday papers
5. Thank you to all our helpers

1. July was a good month for the shop

Our sales in July were just over £15,000. That is more than £1,000 up on last year and the best July we’ve had by far. Our target for July at the start of the year had been £13,500, allowing for the influx of subscription money, but we had periods of consistent sales of over £500 per day last month and so we smashed this target. August promises to be quiet as usual, so anything you spend in the shop this month is twice as valuable for us.

On subscriptions, Judy has done a tremendous job of encouraging you all to subscribe to membership for another year and she is on the verge of breaking last year’s record total. When that happens, I think we will all hear the cheer that emanates from her house in Long Line! So if you haven’t managed to join us yet, please try to do so shortly.

2. Crop for the Shop goes big time!

This is of course a great time for our gardens and sometimes you get a surplus that you can’t deal with. Quite a few people have contributed again this year and we have just received a big donation of Thriplow grown, organic new potatoes from Robert Smith – these are the sort that you go all the way to Waitrose for normally! We are selling them at 60p per 1kg bag. That is cheaper than the cheapest Tesco new potatoes, never mind top quality Waitrose ones. We have quite a few bags but please give them a try while they last.

Not only this, my wish for greengages was answered by Penny and with Shirley providing cucumbers and courgettes and others providing redcurrants, chillies, lettuces (and we’ve been promised pears and plums), this makes a good inroad to fresher, tastier, local, no-carbon, organic produce that also reduces our and your costs. Keep it coming, we love it.

By the way, does anyone have radishes?

3. 150 Club winners

First prize last month went to Malcolm Barrie, who immediately used his winnings to subscribe to membership. Thanks Malcolm. Two of the three other winners were actually in the pub on the night!

The next draw will take place in the Green Man on Tuesday 23rd August at or after 8pm, see you there!

4. Sunday Papers are confusing at the moment

The demise of the News of the World has caused quite a few of the other titles to compete for their readership. They have given copious amounts of coupons away and some have reduced their prices (temporarily, of course). This is a nightmare for us as we can’t keep pace with the prices at 7am on Sunday morning. We have to change the price of each newspaper sale at the till when you pay – as you know, Sunday is when our volunteer army runs the shop. And it’s a problem for you because the coupons aren’t valid for use with a discounted price paper.

Bear with us on this matter, it will straighten out in the end but please note that your Mail on Sunday coupons are valid until the end of August, so you should be able to use them later.

5. We rely on a lot of people

The last point reminds us that our volunteers are little treasures, and we wouldn’t be open on Sunday without them. But our staff, Helen, Sue, Jenny and Keith are doing a wonderful job all year round, and we have three great temporary helpers in David, Emma and Olivia who are covering in the school holidays and at other times of dire need! Thanks to them all and thanks to everyone else who contributes in whatever way they do. Thriplow wouldn’t be the village it is without you.
