Christmas Wine Club Offer
 02-Dec-2011   Thriplow Shop   Nick Wittering

Hi everyone.
As promised a selection of champagnes, ports and dessert wines selected and summarised by Noel Young. I've also tagged on the selection of the previous wine club round for those of you who want to top up your stocks for Christmas.
Please order by option number and quantity required, for example 4 bottles of item 2, 6 bottles of item 7 and 1 case of item 16.
Let me know by return email and I will deliver your order to you before the school holidays start.
Thanks, and if I don't see you before then - Merry Christmas!
Kevin

Champagnes

1. Gallimard Pere et Fils Cuvée Reservée Brut NV - £25.20 per bottle
From Les Riceys, 100% Pinot Noir, full flavoured and well-aged really high quality, real depth to this. Dry and full of fruit and biscuity richness, with a lovely fresh finish.

2. Clos de la Chapelle ‘L’Instinct’ Premier Cru Brut NV - £26.00 per bottle
The Champagne Clos de la Chapelle was founded in 1948 by a few vine-growers wishing to join forces to market their production and add value to their work. They now numbers 23 independent vine-growers situated in Villedommange which is a 1er Cru-rated village on the west side of the Mountain of Reims, an area all the more favourable to growing black grapes. This is a lovely well aged wine, with a fine mousse and lots of stone fruit, red berry too, fresh and really attractive.

3. Lallier Premier Cru Rosé Brut NV - £33.60 per bottle
A pretty pale pink champagne of exhilarating freshness, elegance and red subtlety, made from principally Pinot Noir and one fifth Chardonnay grapes. Matured in bottle on its lees for 48 months, it captures clean fresh red fruit on the nose, followed by lively fresh fruit flavours on the palate with an appealing softness. Elegant and vey sippable - the perfect Champagne combination.

4. Lallier Grand Cru Brut Vintage 2005 - £45.40 per bottle
Lallier Vintage (Millesimé) is not declared every year and this is a champagne of exhilarating freshness with toasty and brioche flavours, made slightly from more Pinot Noir than Chardonnay. Straw yellow with fine delightful bubbles. Green apples with a twist of lime on the nose, it follows through to a developed and flavoursome finish.

5. Pol Roger Brut Reserve (White Foil) NV - £42.00 per bottle
Known as 'White Foil', it's on cracking form. Made from equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Lovely Pinot fruit on the nose. Honeyed and fresh with citrus and stone fruits on the palate. Crisp but rounded. Really good. Winston’s favourite!

Sparkling Wines

6. Cavit Lunetta Prosecco Spumante NV Italy - £10.00 per bottle
A deliciously light and fruity Prosecco with hints of apple and peach on the nose and a fresh, softly sparkling palate with characters of soft ripe stone fruits. Clean fairly dry finish.

7. Codorniu Cava 'Seleccion Raventos' Brut NV, Spain - £11.00 per bottle
Forget cheap supermarket Cava, this is the real deal. Multi award winning; it’s full of lemony fruit with a lovely dry biscuity richness. Clean lively finish.

Port

8. Krohn LBV 2006 - £13.00 per bottle
LBV Port with bags of flavour and length on the finish. Krohn may not be that well known but they are making fabulous ports.
Deep ruby colour with upfront aromas of black plums, spice and dried herbs, firm and evident tannins and a rich, long finish. The generous plummy characters, freshness and pure berry fruit characterise Krohn LBV.

9. Fonseca Unfiltered LBV 2005 - £15.00 per bottle
This is a superb unfiltered, late bottled vintage port. It's a lovely rich sweet style true to the Fonseca house. Rich fruits and a really round finish, high quality indeed.

10. Krohn Colheita 2000 - £16.25 per bottle
Colheita is essentially a vintage tawny; this was bottled this year, so 11 years in barrel. Its way better than most 10 year old tawny ports I have tried. Shown at tastings it's been a smash hit. Made with the traditional Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Francesa varieties. It's still quite red in colour with lovely sweet Christmas cake flavours and berry fruits, has a lovely balance between the sweet fruit and the woody spicy notes. Terrific with blue cheeses, sipping on its own but also with mince pies and such like. Really beautiful and more-ish it's a terrific value.

11. Dow’s 1997 Vintage Port - £48 per bottle
Classic vintage port from one of the greats. Just starting to hit maturity, it’s rich and complex with lovely sweet berry fruit. Lovely powerful long finish.

Dessert Wines

12. Chambers Liqueur Muscadelle, Australia - £10.50 per half bottle
Muscadelle is the name given to what is known in Australia as Tokay. From Rutherglen this is a lovely raisined dessert wine. Honeyed caramel, butterscotch and a real grapey, raisin character. Thick, rich and luscious. Perfect with Christmas pudding and mince pies.

13. Chateau Grange Neuve Monbazillac 2007, France - £11.50 per half bottle
This is a fabulous dessert wine much better than most modestly priced Monbazillac. It's a blend of Semillon, Sauvignon and a little Muscadelle. An extremely elegant wine with lovely honeyed tropical and stone fruits on the nose. It is unctuously luscious with a great backbone of fine acidity for a fresh finish. Properly sweet - I find so many Monbazillac are not really sweet enough, this is also way better than most inexpensive Sauternes.
Now the last round of normal wines in the usual categories:
