Daffodil Weekend results

Well we wanted the 50^th Daffodil Weekend to be different and memorable – and it certainly was! I have checked the records and can confirm that this Daffodil Weekend was the coldest on record – by a considerable margin. Average daytime temperature -1 which felt like -7 when wind chill was factored in.

What impressed me most was the attitude of the volunteers and visitors – it was gloriously British with everyone comparing notes on how cold they were and how horrible it was whilst having massive grins on their faces – and when it all got too much they would solve it with a hot cup of tea. A wonderful Dunkirk spirit was present and this is what I think we should remember about this weekend.

I must say a massive thanks to everyone who took part this year. The effort and time commitment from so many people is very impressive and something we should be proud of. Below I have copied a “roll of honour” list of some of the people who took part – this is currently running at over 380 people and still rising. What is particularly pleasing is the level of involvement from young to old and from neighbouring villages and communities as well as family and friends from all over the country. I must also thank the committee members in particular who have put in months of effort.

Visitor numbers were obviously affected by the adverse weather and were down by about 40%. The cold weather also meant we had to spend extra money weather proofing the event through hiring more protective roadways etc. However we are estimating that the final amount raised will be around £18,000 so still a very good result.

There are still some areas of the village that we need to tidy up – in particular the straw on the village green and we will be dealing with this next weekend
