Dead heading!
Why not go for a walk round the village this evening to enjoy the lovely spring weather and perhaps dead head some daffodils at the same time…
This is the most important time of year when the daffodils need some care and attention.
Start by deadheading as soon as the flowers have faded. Dead heading really works – you may have noticed that the daffodils on the village side of the speed hump on Fowlmere Road flowered much more strongly than many others – these were all dead headed last year. To dead head you can either carefully pull or cut off the faded flower, plus the developing seed pod behind the flower, but leave the flower stems and leaves to die down naturally. Don’t be tempted to remove the foliage before it has turned yellow or brown as the bulbs need the leaves to feed them. Mowing can usually take place about 6 weeks after flowering has finished – mowing earlier than this will mean your daffodils will come up blind (no flowers) next year.
Dead heading is actually very therapeutic. Why not do some tonight and then have a drink at the pub? If everyone does a bit then it can make a huge difference
Special thanks to whoever has already deadheaded all of Farm Lane – well done!
Best wishes
Paul
