Hi everyone, lots of news, not all of it good.

  1. Judy Bradshaw
  2. AGM
  3. Subscriptions are now due
  4. New milk fridge
  5. 150 Club winners for June
  6. Saturday help needed
  7. Judy Bradshaw died earlier this month. Judy was a founder committee member of the Shop Association and worked tirelessly for the shop, usually in a hidden way because many of the things she did were administrative and therefore not publicly visible. Judy undertook a variety of jobs including:
    • sorting out electricity contracts
    • calculating and paying monthly wages, sick pay and holiday pay
    • initiating and tending the shop’s garden
    • helping stock up the major order of the week from Bookers
    • collecting annual subscriptions
    • dealing with the debit card machine contract and data security issues
    • organising the best deal for our insurance policies
    • paying our supplier invoices
    • managing our bank balances, sometimes through very tricky times
    • playing a major part in the effort that the shop makes to display and sell Christmas goods

Any of these tasks in themselves are time consuming. Putting them all together in one person (who, remember didn’t get paid) is astonishing.

But most of all, Judy was a bright, enthusiastic, co-operative and happy person who would talk to anyone and whose heart was entirely in the good of the shop. Without volunteers like Judy, the shop wouldn’t survive.

We have missed Judy since last October and we miss her even more now. Our heartfelt condolences go to Judy’s family.

2. At the AGM, in late June, we declared a small profit on the year of £1,720. This is perfect as it means we are keeping our head above water but not charging more than we need to. We will try to keep this balance going forward.

3. The AGM signals the time when membership subscriptions are now due for this year. These cost £10 and you can take out more than one subscription per household if you wish. Many do and subscriptions last year almost amounted to our net profit so you can see how important these are. Margaret Jackson has taken over this task from Judy and is happy to collect money from you, or alternatively, you may pay the money over to the staff in the shop and they will take the money through the till. Thank you in advance for your support on these contributions.

4. We are having to replace the milk fridge in the shop. It has a problem which would be very expensive to repair and so next Wednesday we will be changing over. We are required to get the old fridge out and the new one in, so if anyone (men or strong lads preferred!) could help lift the old one out at 9am next Wednesday, 22nd July, please could they contact Kevin (208727) who will otherwise be blue in the face struggling with them on his own! It will take but a few minutes.

5. Winners of the 150 Club draw for June were:

  • 1st Prize of £50 – Sue Whitmore
  • 2nd Prize of £30 – Annie Eccles
  • 3rd Prize of £20 – Caroline Harris
  • 4th Prize of £10 – Kevin Clarke (yippee!)6. We are losing the services of David and Jenny Heinzelmann who have been running the shop on almost every Saturday for the past few years. We wil be advertising this post in the local newspapers. If you, or anyone you know wants to be considered for this (paid) position, starting in Mid September, please let us know. The work starts at 7am and finishes at 1.30pm approximately. Full training will be given.

Although D&J have done this nearly every week, this doesn’t have to be the case – there could be a rota if two couples wanted to do the work.

That’s all for now.

Kevin Clarke
