For the unitiated the evening works like this; a bar opens in the school at 8pm and we have a social hour for people to mix and mingle and then the film gets shown at 9pm. The tickets cost £5 and it includes pretty much unlimited popcorn! All profits are split between St George's Church and Thriplow Church of England Primary School. It's good fun, relaxing, low commute - the only question is why wouldn't you be there?

FILM CHOICES

CHOICE 1 = 'X + Y'

X+Y follows Nathan, an awkward, idiosyncratic teenager, grappling with the sudden death of the one person who understood him; his father. As he struggles to connect with those around him, he is introduced to an anarchic and unconventional maths teacher who takes Nathan under his wing.

Soon Nathan finds himself selected for the UK Mathematics Squad and, against the odds, representing his country in Taipei. Over there, the academically gifted aren't bullied but celebrated, envied and even invited to parties. Nathan's rational brain can cope with the most complex of maths problems just fine, the real test comes when he meets his female exchange partner, Zhang Mei, and has to cope with falling in love; the most irrational thing of all.

Written by James Graham and directed by BAFTA Award winner Morgan Matthews. Starring Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, An Education), Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Hugo), Rafe Spall (Life of Pi, Prometheus), Jo Yang and Eddie Marsan (War Horse, Sherlock Holmes).

CHOICE 2 = 'SELMA'

SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernays SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

CHOICE 3 + 'FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD'

Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
